This meant we needed to find out the power consumption to make sure the power inverter could cope. Plus I didn’t want to run the van’s batteries flat every morning.

## How Many Watts is a Blender?

The average blender uses between 700 and 1500 watts.

The exact number depends on the size and model of your blender. These appliances vary in size from personal smoothie machines to multi-cup giants. The smaller machine draws a lot less power around 700W or less. While a larger blender’s motor will pull 1200W and more!

You might also see very small low wattage blenders for sale. This is a handy way to save power but the performance can be inconsistent and frustrating in my experience.

## How to Find Out Your Blender Wattage

There are 3 ways you can work out the wattage of a blender.

**Check Product Specification**

The quickest way is to look at the blender’s specification. The watts (W) is usually written on a sticker on the base of the appliance. If not, you can check the user manual or the manufacturer’s website for technical details.

**Use a Wattmeter**

A wattmeter is brilliant for getting a live wattage reading and tracking the total energy usage of any appliance. You can simply plug it into your blender to get instant information.

I used one to test my blender which gave a live reading of 1017W.

**Wattage Formula or Calculator**

If you know the amperage and voltage of your blender you can use this to find the running watts. Simply use the formula Amps x Volts = Watts. Or you can head over to the ‘Watt Calculator’ to work this out.

As you can see, the power ratings vary between different blenders. So you should take the time to check your own appliance.

## How Much Electricity Does a Blender Use?

You can use a blender’s wattage to work out how much electricity it uses. Adding to this, it can be used to calculate how much it costs to run your blender.

A watt (W) is a measurement of power at a single point in time. A watt-hour is the total amount of electricity used in an hour. For example, a blender drawing 1200W would use 1200Wh when running for an hour.

Happily, electricity bills are recorded in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A kilowatt is simply 1000 watts. So a 1200W blender running for 1 hour uses 1.2kWh.

In reality, you use a blender for 1 minute a day. This means a blender uses about 20Wh or 0.02kWh electricity a day. That’s 0.6kWh a month and 7.3kWh a year.

That’s a rough electricity cost of $1 a year to blend your smoothie each morning. Pretty great value!

## Using a Blender Off-Grid

If you’re planning to use your blender in an off-grid situation like an RV, boat, semi-truck, or similar, the information above is important. You can accurately select the right power products and know how long it will run.

You can either use a power inverter, portable power station, or generator to produce AC electricity.

To make sure everything runs smoothly you should check two things on this equipment – wattage capacity and total energy capacity.

Your power source, like an inverter, should have a wattage capacity of at least 20% more than your blender. This ensures it will be able to deliver enough power as they are never 100% efficient. To blend a smoothie, you will need at least 1200W of power capacity for a small blender and 1500W+ for a large blender. This should give you enough capacity to run your appliance without overworking your equipment.

Secondly, you need to ensure your energy source, like a battery, has enough energy to run the blender for the required amount of time. As we already know, it will use about 20Wh electricity for each usage. This is the equivalent to 1.6Ah on a 12V battery.

These appliances use a motor to spin a metal blade so they do have quite a high power consumption. You can get very low wattage versions, but these tend to give inconsistent results! Adding to this, even if a large one draws over 1000W, it will only be running for a minute or two.
